Geary Arrives for Modified Winternationals Win

The third night of the DIRTCar UMP Modified portion of the 2022 Winternationals resulted in the third winner of the week while the Top Gun Sprints saw a repeat winner in the 25-lap main.

With the Modified drivers getting a last opportunity to secure valuable points for Saturday’s main event, there was plenty on the line for the night’s competition. Tyler Nicely set the pace with the fast time for the second time of the week, but this time he drew a “2” for the inversion, moving the fast timer of each group to the outside front row. Heat winners were Jeremy Rayburn, Brian Shaw, Nicely, Brian Skaggs, Seth Geary and Shane Burrows. The 12-lap B mains went to Drake Troutman, Pat Hoffman and Chris Wilson.

Nicely took the early lead from the pole at the start of the 30-lap feature event, keeping his car on the bottom and forcing challengers to the middle and higher. Trouble struck early as a Travis Varnadore spin collected Kevin Adams on lap 3. On the restart, Nicely had to fend off the challenges of Brian Shaw, who grabbed the lead briefly before Nicely got back in front. Shaw’s persistence resulted in a lead change on lap 11. His time in front would be short as Seth Geary took control on lap 13. Through several restarts, Geary was undaunted as Nicely began to pester the local racer. Geary cruised to the win, backing up his March 2021 regular season victory. Geary revealed the work commitments kept him home for the first two nights, but the Friday win was very special, considering the level of competition.

Throughout the week, drivers had been accumulating points to determine Saturday racing fields. The top six in points were locked in to the 75-lap, $5,000-to-win main event while the remainder of the field will go through heats and consolations to determine the starting field. The top six through three nights were Lucas Lee, Victor Lee, Chris Wilson, Drake Troutman, Bryan Bernhardt and Kevin Adams.

A field of 28 cars were on hand for the second night of the 2022 Top Gun Sprints season opener. The opening events were won by Billy Bridges, Shane Kreidler, Tyler Clem and Joe Zuczek. Four cars advanced from the B main to round out the field, led by Ohio’s Justin Clark.

At the start of the 25-lap main, the red flag flew before the first lap was completed. Brandon Grubaugh moved outside, but ended up in the wall and the car toppled. Grubaugh was unhurt but done for the night. Frank Beck took the early lead, but Garrett Green drove to the point on the second lap. As Green darted into lapped traffic, he had Thursday winner Danny Martin Jr. closing the gap. On lap six, Martin slipped to the inside to take the lead. Shane Butler mounted his own charge, making his way past Green for second on lap 17, but Martin was not to be denied.

The final night action is set for Saturday to complete week three of the 2022 Winternationals.

Victor Lee Makes Late Race Pass Count for Winternationals Win

The second night of the DIRTCar UMP portion of the 2022 Winternationals saw an increase in car count as well as the addition of the season opener for the Top Gun Sprints series. The pit area saw 63 Modifieds and 26 Sprints for a Thursday night racing.

Two-time 2021 Winternationals Modified winner Drake Troutman topped the field in qualifying and drew a 1 to set the fields for the six heats. Preliminary events went to Lucas Lee, Tyler Nicely, Victor Lee, Troutman, Steve Stevenson and Travis Varnadore. The top three in each of the preliminary events moved to the A main while three B mains set the rest of the field. The B features were won by Dawson Cook, Bradley Jameson and Allen Weisser.

Stevenson took the early lead in the 30-lap DIRTCar UMP Modified main in his first start in a newly acquired race car. The field was slowed for a caution on lap 5. On the restart, trouble hit as the field was approaching the green flag. Stevenson drove deep into the restart zone without picking up the pace, causing a chain reaction collision that involved a dozen cars. Lucas Lee’s ride climbed over Stevenson’s wheel and safety crews had to separate the cars. Race officials charged the caution to Stevenson, giving the lead to Lucas Lee. The new leader committed to the low line as the field shuffled behind in position battles. Kevin Adams and Troutman committed to the top line and tried to advance on the lower line. Tyler Nicely put on the best attempt to get past Lee, but found himself running out of racing room off the second turn with six laps to go. The new challenger would be Victor Lee, who last competed at East Bay 21 years ago. Victor Lee swept past Lucas Lee with three laps to go and roared to an exciting win. In victory lane, Lee dedicated the win to the late C.J. Rayburn, who had been an integral part of Lee’s racing operation.

The Top Gun Sprints held four heat events with A.J. Maddox, Luke Hill, Danny Martin Jr. and Garrett Green winning their heat races. In the 25-lap main event, Maddox held the lead for the first lap until Green moved out for the lead on the next lap. On the next lap, Martin slipped into second, as the fast cars moved to the top to make their way around the back of the field. Martin made his move for the lead on lap 7, sweeping low in an open area to complete the pass. The first caution waved on lap 10, but Martin was strong on restarts. Green was chasing and averted disaster late in the race when Danny Jones spun in front of the challenger. With his win, Martin picked up the Lee and Jeff Barfield Memorial Clean Sweep bonus of $300.

The action continues Friday night with 25 laps offered for Top Gun Sprints and 30 laps for the DIRTCar UMP Modifieds.

Bernhardt Win Kicks Off DIRTCar UMP Modified Winternationals

After a Tuesday rainout, the DIRTCar UMP Modified portion of the 46th annual Winternationals got started on Wednesday with a field of 60 cars opening the program, representing 15 states.

Kentucky’s Tyler Nicely posted the fastest qualifying time of the night with a 16.964 and drew a “1” to create a straight-up start for the heats. Winners of the preliminaries were Dale Kelley, Nicely, Chris Wilson, Lucas Lee, Chase Allen and Drake Troutman.

The top three finishers in each heat advanced to the 25-lap feature, sending the rest to one of three 12-lap B mains. The B features were won by Shane Burrows, Tyler Clem and Kevin Adams.

Heat winner Chase Allen forfeited his sixth starting spot after an issue with his car, taking over Zachary Hawk’s ride for the feature and moving to the rear. At the start, Nicely pulled out to a solid advantage, but trouble struck early. As Nicely came roaring into the fourth turn on the third lap, the car spun and the field took evasive action. The action continued hot and heavy at the front as Chris Wilson took over the top spot. Wilson had to hold off the challenges of Lucas Lee and Dale Kelley with Bryan Bernhardt coming from the fourth row to challenge. As the field hit the halfway mark, Kelley lost the handle and spun to the inside. That opened the door for Bernhardt to move to second. It didn’t take long for the 2021 track champion to move to the front as Wilson bobbled in the second turn and Bernhardt was out front. On several subsequent restarts, Bernhardt was able to pull out, leaving Wilson and Lee to spar for position. A lap 22 caution for Shane Burrows slowed the field for the final time, but no one could catch the eventual winner.

Drivers began accumulating points for the events that will allow the top six after Friday to be locked in for the Saturday 75-lap $5,000-to-win finale.

The week will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 26 with the regular schedule of events. Action will continue Thursday through Saturday with the addition of the Top Gun Sprints. Racing begins at 7 p.m. each night.

Week One of 2022 Winternationals Ends with Cold Night and Hot Action

The third and final event of the first week of the 46th annual Winternational brought afternoon drizzle and cooler temperatures, but the hearty race fans were treated to exciting on-track action. Three new winners were parked in Victory Lane throughout the night with nearly 90 cars in the pit area.

The top six in each division were established by Thursday and Friday points and the elite were exempted from the heat races. They would draw their starting spots after an intermission hot lap session to determine how they would come to the green.

Bill Gise won the lone Mini Sprint heat, setting up the 17-car main. Chris Diamond led the field to the green and held the top spot for the first two corners. Two-time feature winner Bryce Comer came from fourth to gain the lead by the end of the first lap. The race was red flagged when contact was made with a stopped Dennis Sanchez, causing the car to flip. Sanchez was unhurt. When the green returned, Bryce Comer looked well on his way to dominating until trouble struck. As the leader approached a lapped car, the car spun, leaving Comer nowhere to go. The contact sent Comer into a series of flips. The driver was able to walk away from the crash and 2021 track champion Bruce Comer assumed the lead position. On lap 11, Comer and Gise made contact with the resulting incident sending both to the tail just past the halfway mark of the 20-lap feature. Brad Sutton became the fourth leader but his time was short as Ty Nevins scooted past his Hyper Chassis teammate to take the lead. As Nevins settling in, Gise and Comer were charging from the rear. Come moved into second on lap 16 and took the lead from Nevins a lap later. His drive earned him the win in the division’s finale.

A field of 13 were on track for the 20-lap V-8 Warrior/Thunderstock main. Greg Crowe inherited the seventh start spot after winning the heat in his only appearance of the week. At the green, polesitter Mark Roadarmel Jr. had to hold on as Friday Winner Cody Allen was charging on the outside. Allen gained the top spot and worked through the bottom of the race track on his march to his second win.

Matt Haefke and Friday feature winner Nick Skias were the best in heat races for the Micro Sprints as a 19-car field would present itself for Derek Powell’s green flag. Polesitter Glenn Macomber had a brief lead until a determined Jeff Haefke Jr. took over. Haefke set a torrid pace early with Wes Libert running second. A tire issue chased Libert from contention, moving Skias into the best position. Attrition began to become a big factor as several cars dropped out of the contest. Haefke managed to build up a lead after each restart and hustled his car to the finish line in front of a determined group of competitors.

It was a clean sweep for the Gladiators as Robert Kissam jumped from the outside pole to take the lead. The race was caution-free until debris on the back straightaway brought out the yellow on lap 19. In the last lap shootout, Kissam held off Jeff Lacey and posted his third win in as many races. The previous gladiator heat saw Troy Dittebrand with a repeat preliminary win.

The final feature of the night was a 30-lap main for the Street Stocks. Polesitter Scotty Kay Jr. brought a car that hadn’t run in nearly a year and dialed in his program to dominate the feature on the final night. Austin Sanders and Tommy Hill were winners in the heats.

The 46th annual Winternationals will resume on Tuesday, January 25 with UMP/East Bay Modifieds kicking off five nights of action. The Mods will be joined by the Top Gun Sprints for three nights of racing beginning on Thursday.

New Names Join Repeat Winners in East Bay Victory Lane

The second night of the 2022 Winternationals gave the competitors a chance to utilize what they had learned from the Thursday night opener. In many cases, the lessons were taken to heart, setting the stage for an exciting end of week one with Saturday’s features on tap.

Points were tallied for the first two nights and the top six drivers in each class will be locked into the Saturday feature without having to run a heat race. For some, the work of Thursday was countered by the misfortune of Friday.

For a brief moment, 2021 East Bay track champion Bruce Comer enjoyed the lead in the 15-lap Mini Sprint feature. The thrill didn’t last as Thursday winner, Bruce’s nephew Bryce, shot into the lead and never gave up the top spot. With the back-to-back feature wins coupled with a pair of heat races, Bryce Comer remains undefeated going into the final night of action. Doug Dyal opened the night with a preliminary win.

South Florida pavement racer Cody Allen learned some valuable dirt lessons from Thursday’s winner Tommy Hill, following along in Hill’s tire tracks through the early stages of the 15-lap main. Hill’s misfortune, coupled with Allen’s commitment to maintaining his line, allowed to take the lead on lap 6 and hold off the field for the remainder of the race. The division’s heat was won by Hill.

Pennsylvania racers dominated the heat races for the Micro Sprints with Nick Skias, Ryan McAndrew and Corey Schmuck Jr. prevailing in the 6-lappers. McAndrew was the early leader, looking to improve upon his Thursday night runner-up finish. Skias, who endured rough night on Thursday, saw his fortunes turn as he drove a strong running race car around McAndrew for the top spot. The rest of the race would not be a cruise as Skias found himself holding off Ohio’s Jeff Haefke Jr., who gained quickly to the end. Time ran out for Haefke as Skias came home with the win. The winning effort was not enough to offset Thursday’s performance as Skias ended up eighth in the points, led by McAndrew.

A pair of 11-car heat races were witnessed in the Gladiator class, won by Troy “Socks” Dittebrand and Patrick Tabb. Dittebrand would establish himself in the front after bypassing Wayne Kissam and Raymond Rogers Jr. Thursday winner Robert Kissam started 11th in the 21-car heat, but had moved to second by the late stages. Kissam could close, but could not pass as Dittebrand took the checkered flag in front. The trip;le deuce failed tech inspection, handing Kissam his second straight win.

The Street Stock main offered wall-to-wall action. Thursday runner-up Tim Powers was on the early point, pestered by fellow Okeechobee racer Scotty Kay Jr. Throughout the racer, there was plenty of side-by-side racing action. Near the midpoint of the race, Powers and Kay were battling when 2021 East Bay track champion Rich Livernois shot past both to grab the lead. From there, everyone else was racing for second as Livernois repeated his 2021 Winternationals win with another stop in Victory Lane.

For the final night of racing action, features will be extended. Classes that had 15-lap mains this week will be racing 20 laps while Street Stocks will see 30 laps.

2022 Winternationals Kicks Off with 5 Division Show

With a busy schedule for the 2022 events, the Winternationals kicked off on a Thursday night with five divisions in action. Spectators enjoyed thrilling competition in wingless Mini Sprints, Thunderstock/V-8 Warriors, Micro Sprints, Gladiators and Street Stocks. After six lap preliminaries in each class, feature races encompassed 15 laps except for the Street Stocks, who competed for 20 circuits.

Local racers dominated the Mini Sprints and a familiar name parked in Victory Lane to kick off the program. Three-time 2021 feature winner Bryce Comer dominated the 15-lap main after claiming a win in his heat earlier in the night. With a new look and a new sponsor, Bryce led uncle Bruce, the 2021 track champion, across the finish line. Brad Sutton, who had competed in the Tulsa Shootout a few weeks ago, won his heat event.

Defending V-8 Warrior track champion Nick Brown stepped out of his car for the Winternationals, giving Tommy Hill the opportunity to compete in the class. Hill made good on the day, making his way to Victory Lane in the 15-lapper. Hill, who would also compete in the Street Stock class, carried the margin of victory from the start. Heats were won by Raymond Rogers Jr. and Michael Hart.

An influx of drivers from the north boosted the car count in the Micro Sprints as 20 competitors took the green for the 15-lap main. Pennsylvania racer Tyler Martin opened the night with a heat race win while North Carolina’s Matt Thompson claimed the second event. The Keystone State won the rubber match with Wes Libert topped the third heat. In the main, Thompson moved out front and looked strong until he was run down by Jeff Haefke Jr. The two made contact and spun to a stop on the entry to turn one, handing the lead to Brandon Fredericks. The new leader made the most of it, nursing his car to the checkered flag. Fredericks shared in Victory Lane that a year ago he wasn’t racing because his father had a heart attack. Tonight, his father was in attendance to witness the win.

After weather cancelled their opportunity in 2021, Gladiators responded to a chance to participate in the Winternationals by sending 22 cars to the opening feature. Josh Genarie held the early lead in his bid to back up a late 2021 feature win. Robert Kissam was able to make his way past Genarie to grab the lead. Kissam was not to be denied as he willed a balky race car to victory. Troy “Socks” Dittebrand, Jeff Lacey and Kissam claimed heat race wins.

The Street Stock 20-lap main was thrilling as race leader Zack Amundsen had his hands full throughout. Challenges came from Tim Powers, Paul Davis and Tim Gay throughout the race with Gay actually sneaking by at the stand for a brief lead near the midway point. Amundsen stayed steady throughout, though he had to endure a late race caution that set up a green-white-checkered finish. Amundsen pulled away down the backstretch and cruised home to a gratifying win. The victory came after a disappointing 2021 and sets the stage for better times ahead. Powers, Tommy Hill and Davis were best in the heats.

The second night of the 2022 Winternationals will see action in the five divisions as the last tuneup before the Saturday finale. Race time is 7 p.m. Winternationals racing action can also be enjoyed on Flo Racing in 2022. Details are available at www.floracing.com.
