Morgan, Horton, Boyd Lead East Bay Winners

It was Full House Night for East Bay Raceway Park with the added attraction of Dirts4Racing Street Stocks. The top prize for the 25-lap Street Stock main was $750, but only one driver could walk away with the win.

When the checkered flag flew for the Street Stocks, Brian Morgan was destined for Victory Lane. Early race leader Greg Crowe set the pace for the first five laps until a mechanical issue would force his retirement. Brian Morgan inherited the front spot, holding off the charge of Michael Stalnaker, who also had his hands full with Tim Gay. Scotty Kay Jr. and Tim Powers climbed into the top five late in the race, but Morgan could not be stopped from the victory. Morgan had visited East Bay last week, but found the track to be much different than what he had experienced seven days before.

Stalnaker claimed the Street Stock dash to end the night’s racing.

A lap 12 pass put Billy Boyd on his way to his second feature win of the 2018 season. Using the highline, Boyd swept from fourth to second on a mid-race restart. Within a few laps, he slipped past leader Frank Beck and never looked back.

Doug Horton used his pole starting spot to parlay his early race lead into a full-fledged victory in the 30-lap Pro Late Model feature. Horton, the current point leader, had been unsuccessful in his quest for a feature win to this point. Phillip Cobb kept the leader in his sights to finish second.

Austin Sanders went to the lead at the drop of the green and ran a steady pace to hold the competition at bay. Sanders’ initial challenger, point leader Bryan Bernhardt, fell victim to a blown tire on the last lap, yielding second to David Pollen.

Brandon Yates opened the night’s action with a wire-to-wire win in the Outlaw 4s. Nearest challenger Eric Knight was celebrating his birthday, but Yates was not in a giving mood on the evening. It was Brandon Yates’ second feature win of the year.

Nick Brown was a force to be reckoned with in the V8 Warrior main event. Brown seized the lead after inheriting a front row starting spot. The best battles were happening for this behind Raymond Vann. Jessica Robbins and Michael Hart were in close proximity lap after lap. When Vann retired, it became a battle for second and Robbins claimed it for her best finish of 2018.

Daniel Woody was the class of the field in the Late Model Sportsman action. Woody was never passed through the entire race, but there was plenty of overtaking throughout. Trent Wilson slipped around Jared Allison late to move to a comfortable second behind Woody. Forrest Gough recovered from a mid- race spin to grab third.

DJ Taylor passed Kever Raulerson on lap 11 and appeared to be the winner, but the tech inspectors had other ideas. With Taylor’s DQ, Raulerson notched his third feature of the season in Gladiator competition.

East Bay Raceway Park will return to action next week to close out the month of June. Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Late Model Sportsman, V8 Warriors, Sreet Stocks, Micro Sprints and Gladiators will bring exciting action for Saturday night racing.

Devin Dixon Notches Third East Bay Main of 2018

Some of the biggest fields of the year pulled through the pit gate Saturday night for Father’s Day weekend competition at East Bay Raceway Park. Those expecting exciting action were not disappointed.

The evening was highlighted by the Larry Miller Memorial, a 50-lap contest for Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds. A field of 19 were gridded for the showdown, which included a $2,000 winner’s share.

Mavrick Varnadore grabbed the early race lead from the outside pole. Varnadore’s efforts to keep the top spot were stymied by cautions flags every two laps through the early stages. Varndaore’s first challenger was current division point leader Bryan Bernhardt, who pestered the race leader through the halfway mark. Behind the lead duo, several battles made the top five spots look different with each passing lap. Devin Dixon vaulted from fourth to put himself in position to slip past Varnadore on lap 28. This moved Varnadore back to the clutches of Bernhardt, but Bernhardt spun to give third to Jeff Mathews. Polesitter Austin Sanders was starting a charge to become a factor in the top five, but Dixon had moved out to a somewhat comfortable lead. Sanders claimed second on lap 36 with Steve Miller charging to third. Miller would drop out on lap 44. Mathews seized the chance on a late race restart to move into second and give chase on Dixon. The leader, who had also won the Rusty Dixon Memorial Modified event and the Dnnie Tanner Memorial for Pro Late Models, cruised across the line victorious, ahead of Mathews and Varnadore. Sanders, Bernhardt and Varnadore had won heat races.

Robby Hoffman wasted no time in getting to the front in the 15-lap Mini Sprint main event. Hoffman grabbed the lead, only to lose it briefly to teammate David Hall. Hoffman slipped back past and rolled on for his second win of the year. Jamie Tinkham and Kenny Brewer won their respective heats.

An exciting Street Stock feature race saw side-by-side racing throughout the 22-car field. When the checkered flag flew, it was veteran John Bradley back in Victory Lane. Bradley grabbed the lead from Zach Amundsen, who was nursing a car with left front damage. Bradley was able to make the pass on lap five, but the remaining laps saw Thomas Pratt and a hard charging Tim Powers give the eventual winner something to worry about. Bradley, Pratt and David Barwick II were heat race winners.

The Gladiator class welcomed a new member to the honor roll of victory. Daniel Casey led from start to finish to score his first career feature win in only his second year of competition. To get the win, Casey had to hold off defending class champion Daniel Bowman and he was able to accomplish the feat. Casey dedicated his win to his mother, who had passed away earlier this year.

John “Gonzo” Godwin had a storied career in asphalt racing, but told the East Bay crowd in Victory Lane “I wish I had started racing dirt a long time ago.” Godwin prevailed in the 15-lap main for the Florida Old Time Modifieds. He was chased by heat winner Lars Amundsen, who was driving a Dover Brake Buzzie Reutimann Mod in competition.

Next week, East Bay Raceway Park will be hosting a “Full House Night” with Pro Late Models, Q Auto & Injury Sprints, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Late Model Sportsman, Street Stocks, V8 Warriors, Outlaw 4s and Gladiators.

Maddox Claims East Bay Top Gun Sprints

A.J. Maddox survived a blown right rear tire on the last lap of the 25-lap Top Gun Sprints main to claim his second series victory at East Bay in 2018. Maddox, who had earlier won his heat race, which gave him the keys to the Jeff Barfield Memorial Clean Sweep Award, limped to the line ahead of early race leader Billy Bridges.

Maddox took the lead from Bridges on the sixth lap and endured a combination of cautions and lapped traffic en route to stretching out the lead. Several position battles took place inside the top five, but Maddox clearly had the car to beat on this night.

Dylan Colding and Justin Webster joined Maddox as heat race winners

George Handy opened the night’s features by claiming his first victory in V8 Warrior action. Handy had to hold off the charge of last week’s feature winner Tommy Hill. Handy’s win allowed him to take a positive step in the defense of his 2017 track championship. Raymond Vann and Kalen Maynard has won the division’s preliminary events.

Brandon Yates broke through for his first 2018 feature win in the Outlaw 4 class. Yates went wire-to-wire to claim the title with heat race winner Nick Hebrank lurking in second.

Daniel Bowman fought off the challenges of Wayne Kissam through the late stages of the Gladiator 15-lap feature to claim victory in the final event of the night. Kissam worked the top side, but just couldn’t complete the pass for victory. Kissam and Bowman won their heat races.

The Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association brought cars in three classes with David Kelley (Sprints), Bob Jordan (Midgets) and Jerry Jarrett (Modifieds) winning their 15-lap features.

East Bay Raceway Park will return to action on June 16 with the Larry Miller Memorial for the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds. The 50-lap main event will pay $2,000 to the winning driver. The Modifieds will be joined  by Street Stocks, Gladiators, Mini Sprints and the Florida Old Time Modifieds.

Dixon Takes the High Line to Victory at East Bay

Racing action resumed at East Bay Raceway Park after an unplanned two-week vacation due to inclement weather. Mother Nature smiled upon the Clay by the Bay for a Saturday program, headlined by the Donnie Tanner Memorial 50-lap main for Pro Late Models.

A field of 19 cars gathered for the start of the event with polesitter Jack Nosbisch Jr. taking the early lead. Keith Nosbisch kept his car down low for second, forcing Phillip Cobb to the top line. Point leader Doug Horton, who started on the outside of the front row, exited the track at the first caution on lap 3 and rejoined at the tail end for the restart. Horton clawed his way toward the front of the field over the course of the next 15 laps, moving into the top five by lap 21. He continued his assault and moved to second behind Jack Nosbisch at the halfway mark. In the meantime, fifth-starting Devin Dixon was a near constant force inside the top five, using the outer edge of the racetrack while most were content to stay on the bottom. A red flag on lap 30 broke the momentum for the field with Horton as the new leader, trailed by Jack Nosbisch, Ivedent Lloyd, Keith Nosbisch and Dixon. Position battles were fierce and Dixon was able to pull into the lead from the outside by lap 38. Despite another caution, no one could catch Dixon, who nearly didn’t run the event. Using a team car to Jeff Mathews, Dixon and his crew thrashed to get the ride ready and made the right set-up calls to charge to victory. Horton came home second, ahead of Jack Nosbisch, Lloyd and Mathews. Heat wins went to Horton, Jack Nosbisch and Keith Nosbisch.

Kevin Strife recorded his second feature win of the season in Micro Sprint racing action. Strife, who also won his preliminary eased out to a wire-to-wire run. Mike Meyers, who finished second, also won his heat race.

The Street Stock action saw Tim Gay notch his second main of the season. Starting on the pole, Gay took advantage of the clear space, but still had to hold off challenges throughout the 15-lap main. Zach Amundsen and john Bradley were heat race winners.

The V8 Warriors lived up to their name with exciting action. Several lead changes throughout the night kept the fans occupied but racing throughout the pack saw a position battle somewhere in the field for every lap. When it was all said and done, Tommy Hill squeezed by George Handy in the late laps to claim his first 2018 win. Handy and point leader Jason Burnside started their nights with heat wins.

East Bay Raceway Park will return to action on Saturday June 9 with the return of the Top Gun Sprints. The winged warriors will be joined by the V8 Warriors, Outlaw 4s, Gladiators and Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association.
